FOOD SECURITY.
DEFINITION.
Our immediate focus under Food Security is food baskets distribution, currently in Malaysia and in Yemen.
Currently, under the Food Security projects, our focus is on the needy families including the Yemeni families and students in Malaysia, orphans, among others. The needy Yemeni people in Malaysia are in thousands, and that the Yemeni community in Malaysia comprises of mainly two categories, i.e., the war refugees and students. The Yemeni war refugees came to Malaysia and stay in this country since 2015, while the students, some of which have already completed their studies and some are still studying at various public and private universities and colleges, have got to stay in this country due to the same reason, i.e., because of the arms conflict in Yemen. These students suffer from financial difficulties as their source of income, mainly financial supports from their sponsors are either stopped or delayed in the payments.
Our focus locally in Malaysia under the Food Security is also on the needy and poor Malaysian families including the orphans staying at various orphans shelter homes in and around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor state.
And of course, the internally displaced people in Yemen is our other target groups under our Food Security projects. Due to the arms conflict and continuous crisis in Yemen, the country is one of the most significant countries in the world in term of food insecurity. In response to this urgent need, INSAN provides emergency food assistance to those needy people through our Food Security projects.
FOOD SECURITY PROJECTS.
INSAN contributed to improving availability and access to food for the needy and vulnerable groups through its emergency food assistance project. This project was undertaken in collaboration with all stakeholders.
Beneficiaries.
Food Basket Distribution.
For a record, our first or pioneer Food Security project came in the form of food basket project, implemented in Kuala Lumpur (Setapak and Gombak areas) and in Bangi, Serdang and Kajang areas (in Selangor state) in 2016. A total of 100 food baskets were successfully distributed to the needy Yemenis and students staying at the aforementioned places. The project saw 100 needy families received their food supply, benefitting over 500 individuals, and RM15,000 was spent on the project.
At the international front, in Taiz gorvenorate, Yemen, a similar project was implementd through our partner, Muath Development Foundation. RM5,260 was spent on this project, benefiting some 500 internally displaced people. This fund was raised through Charity Bazaar held on 29th April, 2016 at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) campus with the help of Yemeni Students’ Club IIUM.

Our sincere efforts in year 2018 saw some improvements in the number of food baskets distributed to the needy in Malaysia. This was because more people got to know INSAN and its humanitarian activities at the local and international levels, and as a result of this, we started to receive more donations. The year 2018 witnessed 185 food baskets distributed to 185 needy families (including orphans) benefitting over 1,125 individuals in Malaysia, at the cost of RM22,578.
At the international level, (i.e., in Taiz gorvenorate, Yemen) with the cooperation of our local non-governmental organization (NGO), i.e., Muath Development Foundation, witnessed a total of 425 food baskets successfully delivered to 425 needy families, benefitting over 2,125 individuals. And we spent a total of RM42,200 on this project in Yemen.

Establishing Bakeries
This project aims at reducing the suffering of poor people by allowing them to have access to daily bread needs. We plan to establish three bakeries in Malaysia (in Serdang, Bangi/Kajang and Gombak areas in Malaysia) in the near future, and two in Hodaidah (in Yemen), to provide bread for 12,000 people on a daily basis.
Meal Distribution
This project is in the form of ready meals whereby INSAN is planning to do it for the first time to the most vulnerable groups in Malaysia and Yemen soon.
